Audio Books: My thoughts so far

Posted June 22, 2012 by Lauren in Lose Time Chatting / 4 Comments

So this week I decided to try audio books.  I’ve really been branching out lately when it comes to electronic based books as I used to be dead against them.  About a month ago I got a tablet after much push from my boyfriend because the book buying is getting a bit out of control.  I agreed that if the book doesn’t have an amazing cover or if it wasn’t something I wanted to own in my collection(terribly want) than I would get an ebook. I’ve been fairly satisfied with reading on the tablet so far, other than the fact that it’s sooo different than holding a book but since that was working out I also decided to try another popular option-audio books.

I was very, very iffy on buying an audio book because I was worried that if I didn’t like the narrator or couldn’t concentrate than I would end up just tossing it aside and buying the physical book.  I found the Sync website where once a week, for the entire summer, they have a free YA audio book and a free classic book available for download.

I decided to try the first audio book, The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch as well as this week’s book Iris’s.  I spend a lot of the time on the computer, and to me that is time wasted from reading so I thought that audio books would be a good option because I was still getting some good “reading” done but also accomplishing what I wanted to on the computer.

I’m not sure how it is working out for me honestly.  I am very easily distracted from the book, I have even fell asleep during the listening. I do not think it is the story either,  The Eleventh Plague is actually a good story but for some reason I cannot focus on the audio version.  I am going to wait it out and finish it the two I have started and see whether I will continue.  I’m sure I will try every YA audio available this summer, and if I can’t get used to listening to the books at least it will give me a chance to see if I like the story or not.

One of the reasons I think I am not enjoying them is because I actually love physical books.  I love the feeling of them, the sound of the pages, the smell of the book, being able to see how big the book is, everything.  I don’t have that when it’s an audio book, or even an ebook.  Maybe I’ll get used to it and really end up enjoying them.  I know a lot of people that absolutely adore audio books, in fact it’s the only way they read.

I am going to continue with them, and we’ll see how it goes.  What is every one’s thoughts on audio books? Even ebooks… do you love them? Hate them? Let me know, I’d love to hear opinions on electronic/audio books!

Also, on a side note.  I finished Vampire Academy yesterday.  Why did I wait so long to read this book? I loved it! A full review will be coming shortly.

Happy Reading Everyone!

  1. I’ve never tried audio books either! I don’t think I would have the patience, but I definitely want to try one day. As for ebooks, I like them for when I’m travelling, but I usually get ebooks for books I’m not sure I’ll like. For really anticipated books I have to own a physical copy. 🙂

Ahh I haven’t read Vampire Academy! It’s one of those books that’s been around for ages but I just never read. Looking forward to seeing your review, Lauren! I really need to catch up on the series this Summer. 🙂

    • I’m the same way with ebooks! And I’ve actually bought a few ebooks that I wasn’t sure if I would like and I did so I bought the physical copy :S

  2. Vampire Academy series was so good – I kinda miss them! And I don’t have an eReader – but I get most of my books from the library or else I would go broke & run out of space.

I also love audiobooks BUT it has to be fast paced and action packed for me to enjoy them. I actually listened to Daughter of Smoke & Bone on audio and it’s going to be one of the free SYNC books, so that would be one I recommend. I only listen when I’m in the car or doing chores or something like that – and I find that I can focus on the audiobook better. Plus I’m really cutthroat with the audiobooks – if I’m not loving it in 10 minutes, it’s on to the next one – I borrow them from the library (online). Next week is actually audiobook week at Devourer of Books – I’m participating in that 🙂

  3. Thanks for stopping by Tanya!

I’ll be sure to try Daughter of Smoke & Bone when that’s available as that’s on my to read list anyways. Maybe I am just getting the wrong ones!
