Top Ten Tuesday
I loved this weeks topic! I have a ton of things I’m always on the lookout for and I wish that there could be more of them. If you know of any books that fit into these topics please let me know (because of course I need more books on my TBR :P)!

1. Boarding Schools

I’m sure this will forever be on every list I write! I love boarding school books. Paranormal, Contemporary, Historical Fiction… I don’t discriminate, I’ll take any genre. As long as it’s set in a boarding school I’m completely content.

2. Paranormal Historical Fiction

I’ve only just slightly rekindled my love for historical fiction. I used to read plenty of adult historical fiction but I got bored with it. I’m slowly coming back to it but my new-found loves are with a paranormal twist! There is something about this additional element that really sucks me in!

3. Witches

Come on authors! I need more witches! We see a ton of vampires and other paranormals but where are all my witches?! I feel like they are often pushed aside or maybe again, I’m just greedy and want more 😛

4. Thrillers that I can’t get the twist

I often guess the ending of thrillers. It’s sad and depressing when I get to an ending that everyone said, “OH MY GOD THE TWIST”, and I’ve already guessed it. I was ecstatic to read Dangerous Girls, and then knew what was happening half way through… so sad. I love thrillers but knowing the ending in advance kind of ruins it a bit for me 😛

5. Winter settings/Ski resorts

I love the cold weather, I love snowboarding, ski resorts… snow… snow storms. I wish there were MORE books that had this type of setting. I love books where people are stranded in the middle of a blizzard in a cottage and they fall back in love… families going to ski resorts… I just love it all. I want more 🙂

6. Dystopians that mix it up

I am so sick of dystopians. I really read a lot of them, and got a bit of a burn out but the one thing I noticed is that a lot of them are the same. I recently read Pawn, and that was unique from others I read and I really enjoyed it. I do love that topic, but I’d like to see some mix up and fresh world building!

I know I only picked six, but that’s all that I could come up with! I’m generally satisfied with the books that are out there but if I had my choice, these are some things I would change/want more of!

What are your picks this week? Do you have any recommendations for me that fit into these topics??! Link up!!

  1. #1 – have you read the Hex Hall series? I just read the first three a few months ago and it’s paranormal boarding school. Pretty good too!

#5 HA we are so opposite. I can’t stand snow! I just don’t get the appeal of being so cold and stiff in pursuit of fun, LOL! But I’m glad there are people who like it because otherwise all the nice warm places would be too crowded. 🙂

    • I have read the Hex Hall series, and loved it!!! There is a spin off as well called School Spirits, that one was really good also!

Haha, most people do hate the snow and cold… for some reason I just missed the party on that. Luckily my boyfriend is the same way because it would be terrible if we liked opposite seasons! I absolutely DESPISE the summer and you can barely force me to work in it, lol.

    • I know!! They were on so many lists 🙂 I’m glad I’m not alone in that… they are just SOOO fun!!! I especially love the paranormal ones like Harry Potter and The Nightmare Affair!

  2. Paranormal historical fiction for sure. Have you read Grave Mercy? That one is like historical fiction/fantasy. If you haven’t yet, you should! Sooo good! And yes for some more unique dystopians! I think I’m pretty burned out on them as well. I would love some new twists thrown in, something super unique to add to the genre.

    • NO I HAVENT! but I own it now 🙂 I am almost certain we have already had this discussion n my StS’s post since I clearly take way to long to reply to things 😛 I’m totally burned out with dystopians… it’s been proven by Uninvited. I’m not even finished it yet and I’m already over it, unless something epic happens in the next 30%.

  3. I totally agree with you with boarding schools. Ever since the Tv show of my childhood Zoey 101, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of boarding schools and it’s such a shame we don’t see more of this in YA. Such potential for a great story!

Same thing for witches. It didn’t actually occur to me until you brought it up but witches are for sure under-respresented in YA when you compare it to vampires. Maybe it’s because Harry Potter did such a dang good job? Regardless, I would still love to see other authors’ interpretation of it!

And speaking of paranormal historical fiction, I’m reading The Diviners right now which fits the bill perfectly! There’s a lot of paranormal but also a lot of historical. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly reccommend it! 🙂

    • I agree, boarding schools have so much potential. Have you read the IT girl series? It’s like Gossip Girl but takes place in boarding school, and it’s just fabulous!

I read a post today at Stacked though that apparently witches are the paranormal of 2014, which is going to THRILL ME! I have added a ton of new releases so hopefully they live up to my expectations!

I have actually DNF’d the Diviners. I am thinking about picking it back up though because at the time I just hated historical fiction… now (obvs) I love it so I’m thinking I would really enjoy it!!

  4. Great list! I would also love more variety in dystopian, it’s my favourite genre but I’ve read so many that they all seem the exact same now! It’s really great when you find one that stands out from all the rest. Great picks 🙂

Also happy to see I wasn’t the only person who struggled to think of things this week! My TTT 🙂

    • Oh, it was terribly hard! Of course, afterwards I thought of a ton of things!!! lol. I’m still struggling with dystopian… I’m reading Uninvited right now and I’m not thrilled with it, although it is slightly more unique than others.

    • That’s the exact word for it Chrystal, infuriating! I have not fallen in love with quite a few books this year, that others have, because I have guessed the plot twist. Not so fun 🙁

  5. FOR REAL. Thrillers without it being easy is ESSENTIAL. So glad youre coming back around to historical a bit! And I agree on witches! Ive never read a witch book but that will soon change! BUT OMG YES TO SKI RESORTS! That would be so fun! OR EVEN A THRILLER AT A SKI RESORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • YES! Gosh… the thrillers is a must. I want more. I am more than coming around to historical at this point, haha… I am so in love!! You need to read the witches 🙂 LIKE NOW! I hope you love it, but I think you will really fall in love (we are still talking about ADOW lol) SKI RESORTS! Oh my god, this is gonna sound so corny but I have wanted to read some more ever since the Babysitters Club had a BSC Super Special and it was a thriller at a ski resort lol. Yah that was like 15 years ago. Oops.
