Book Blogger Confessions
Book Blogger Confessions is a meme posted twice monthly(1st & 3rd Monday) where book bloggers share, discuss & confess book & blog related topics.

How has blogging and reviewing changed your reading habits? Do you read a genre now that you wouldn’t have tried prior? Or have you been turned off by a genre you used to love?

Blogging has changed my reading habits big time. Prior to mid-2012 I used to be a huge non fiction, adult and chick lit reader. I loved those genres. Now I barely want to read any of them.

A little background…

I found Goodreads because of Elle Fowler. I’m not sure if any one knows who that is but she is beauty blogger(and now author) that I used to follow on YouTube. She occasionally posted book review vlogs and I would watch them whenever she posted. In one of her vlogs, she mentioned Goodreads and how a subscriber had pushed her to get an account. I looked it up not knowing at all what it was and it was over from there. I probably spent at least 8 hours straight that first night on Goodreads, and that is the honest truth. I added so many books to my TBR pile, rated all of the books I had previously read and just stalked around looking at others profiles. From there I discovered Book Bloggers. I started looking at some other books people had reviewed that liked books like The Hunger Games, Divergent and Twilight(because they were really the only Young Adult other than Harry Potter I had read) and I was hooked, instantly, on YA. It was like all of my old interests flew out the window upon this discovery, lol.

I hardly touch non fiction now, and it’s only ones that really interest me. And I’ve only recently found some adult books that I’ve enjoyed. I still enjoy Chick Lit but I’ve pushed it the back burner because Young Adult contemporary/New Adult contemporary is just more enjoyable for me right now.

One great thing blogging/reviewing has down for me is opened up a huge new world of genres for me. Prior to blogging I would never had touched science fiction, self published & indie books, Angel novels… pretty much anything I’ve been reading lately.

I also read way more. And I love reading way more… which I never thought would be possible 🙂

What has book blogging changed for you? Please link up your confession posts!!

Happy Reading,

  1. Great post and answer! I never was a non-fiction reader, but I was an Adult reader and seem to not read those as much anymore, even though I love that genre still. Exactly about the genres! Contemporary and a limited selection of dystopian was what I read, but now it’s different. I agree with you 🙂 Love it!

    • Thanks so much for stopping in Sunny! A lot of favorite genres(chick lit for instance) don’t seem to have as many books being published as frequently as YA so that often makes me push them aside for the new YA titles. I think it will always be a battle with us because just isn’t enough TIME, lol.

    • Thanks so much 🙂 YA is such an addictive genre.. there are so many books ALL the time, and book blog stalking does not help either. Goodreads honestly, may very well be the bain of my existence… I still spend hours upon hours a week on it, lol.

  2. Ah, Goodreads. A goldmine. I don’t feel comfortable with social networks like Facebook or Twitter, but GR is highly useful and not invasive, so to speak.
Book blogging seems to have worked well for you, expanding your range of genres :). I did the opposite – started reading YA and discovering what I really liked before I became a book blogger. It may have something to do with me being an ex teenager, as I love to call myself ;D. I only became an YA addict when I didn’t belong to that age group anymore…
Nice blog you have – the layout is very neat, and it’s easy to find anything.
    I’m following by email :).

    • Thanks so much Roberta 🙂

I didn’t read YA when I was actually in that target audience either. Ah well, it seems like a large majority of the book bloggers are the same way. Which is great, genres shouldn’t be painted shut for certain age groups!

  3. We both abandoned non fiction when we started blogging!

Blogging definitely opened up more genres for me. I do tend to burn out on genres now though. I am learning to balance my reading. I mix it up more now that I had been doing. 30 YA/dystopian or PNR in a row was too much lol
